Public Participation GIS (PPGIS)
Spatial planning and public participation have recently begun to be thought of in an integrated fashion. As such, PPGIS represents a broad notion that the spatial visualization and analysis capacities inherent in GIS present a unique opportunity for enhanced citizen involvement in public policy and planning issues.
Understanding how specific publics are linked to certain types of participation is thus an important effort to undertake so that users of PPGIS ideas can appropriately characterize, utilize, implement, and evaluate PPGIS efforts.
More recently, institutional and societal issues have become important subjects of GIS research. Among the societal issues, concerns that all voices should be heard in a democracy have sparked recent research in Public Participation GIS (PPGIS).
